Original Mel’s Drive In was actually in San Francisco and used as the centerpiece for the George Lucas-Modesto-inspired movie American Grafitti

 

 

MODESTO  Home of  American Graffiti Celebrated it’s 19th Annual Festival

honoring the iconic movie (1972) which depicted the ‘Happy Days’ era of the 1950s and early 1960s. The movie was written by George Lucas, who grew up in Modesto during the era and chronicled those memories in the movie. Modesto remains much as it was in the 1960s with a small town feel and many of the same old palaces that Lucas grew up with , including the State Theater, A& W Drive and the famous downtown Cruise strip,
