The iconic movie, American Grafitti, was inspired in the San Francisco Bay Area by popular food drive-ins of the era, particularly Mel’s Drive-in. The original Mel’s was build in 1947 on South Van Ness, San Francisco. Though no longer there, there are a number of newer Mels, both drive-ins and diners , dotting the Bay Area. George Lucas grew up in the Modesto, CA where he visited many a drive-in as a teenager in the early 1960s. He was inspired to produce the movie based on his fond memories of such classic vestiges from his 1950s and 1960s including the music, movies and memories. MORE
